Roundtop Natural Soap Company

Like all good stories, Round Top Natural Soap Company’s starts with humble beginnings.  Jann was a school teacher – she taught English.  Beau was an engineer and gentleman farmer.  They were the parents of four children, three boys and a girl, and they lived in an original 1900s house on a small farm in Round Top, Texas.  The house had come to Beau’s parents and they lovingly restored it to the place Beau called home.  The home had a colorful past, having been built in Harrisburg, one of the original settlements that now make up the vast metropolis of Houston.  But, like Jann and Beau, Beau’s parents wanted to preserve the beauty of the home and the tranquility of their lives.  So they moved the home to its “new home” on the little farm outside of Round Top.

Jann and Beau loved their family, loved teaching, were proud of their country home and loved their community – there just didn’t seem to be enough time for them all.  And, as all mothers know, Jann rarely found time for herself.

Jann struggled with the same issues most young mothers do – how could she spend more time with her children?  How could she find time for herself and her hobbies?  But unlike most, Jann found the answers and she considers the answer her greatest Christmas present ever!

Jann was known for her craft-making creativity and she enjoyed gifting her friends and family with homemade goods during the holidays.  Sometimes sweets and tasty treats, sometimes hand sewn dolls or pillows.  For Christmas 1999, Jann bought a book on soap making and set out hand-making soaps to put under the Christmas trees of her friends and family.

One Saturday morning in early December 1999, Jann stopped in to visit with a girlfriend who ran The Apothecary, a small gift shop on the square in Round Top.  As conversations often do, Jann and her friend talked about their children, jobs, husbands and all the things they just didn’t have time for.  As the conversation continued, Jann’s friend became enthralled with the smell of the handmade soap, wafting from the basket Jann carried under her arm.  Before long, the two friends were dreaming of Jann’s soap making becoming a business.  On a whim, they decided to leave a few bars at The Apothecary to see how they’d sell amongst the costume jewelry, postcards, books and local collectibles already on sale there.

And the rest, as they say, is history…before long, Jann had a booming business at The Apothecary and word was spreading about her products and how they made people feel.  Jann began to experiment with lotions, bath products and even men’s products.  Along the way, Jann and Beau formed an even stronger partnership – today Jann continues to do all the research and development for Round Top Natural Soap Company, while Beau oversees manufacturing.  All their products are still made by hand on their farm with the old farmhouse in Round Top, Texas.  The difference is that Jann and Beau are living their dream.  Their avocation is now their vocation and, together with their family, they make Round Top Natural Soap Company products to share with you.
